Wi-Fi is one of the most widely used technology in today's generation computers , even some country started to give it free for their citizens , but they are not going to worry about data stealing , but if your own a wifi then it's your responsibility to make it secure , so follow the basic guide to protect wifi from hackers and bandwidth stealing...

Setting up a strong password

This is the most-often unnoticed and most simple step, that your Wireless Access router is set with a default passowrd, or even sometimes without password .But be sure to set/change the old/default passowrd to the strongest one.You should have already know and would have also read about setting a strongest password, that is alwasy make sure that you wont forget the password and next thing is making it strong by adding the combined text [upper case & lower case] , numbers & special character [this makes your password the strongest one].But we can't assure that this will protect from hackers, but sure it will make the hackers to take some time to crack it. Once the password is set check back it is not messed with default password.

Changine wap's SSID

Generally SSID [Service Set Identifier] means the name of a WLAN set by the company , by default every router have the same/similar SSID's like "wireless" ,"netgear" ,"linksys"  and this could make your security vulnerable.Your SSID can be changed in the router setting by entering the new suitable name or by letting it optain a new one by leaving it blank.

Disable SSID Broadcast

By default the wifi automatically sends/broadcast their SSID name every few seconds and this enables the hackers work easy to check back the roaming network and get in to one. [May be that could be your's].So second step is to disalbe the wifi ssid broadcast and this can be done by navigating to your router settings page. How ever disabling SSID broadcasting will add a part of security to your wifi , but this won't protect 100% from hacker , because hacker counld even get your wifi by sniffing...

How to log into web portal

Normally the portal address would be http://192.168.1.1 ,
  1. Enter the web address in chrome and hit enter [address is 192.168.1.1 if it doesn't work check back the wifi box]
  2. Once the page loads it popup enter the default user name and password it would be "admin" & "admin" some wifi router will have blank password
  3. Now check for setting tab , it would in top or in upper left corner
  4. Its time to make a change to SSID , so enter the suitable network name ...,
  5. Now check for the broadcasting tab and set if Off with drop menu.

[Optional.] Machine filtering

This is optional step but it works great when your are the only user to access your wifi network , as mentioned in above step your can log into web portal and add the machine address to allow access to particular step , but if your wifi are used by your fiends this option won's suit you.
